PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome to Week 7.
We have a new P&C President
I would like to officially welcome our new P&C president, Mr Joeffrey Agbayani (father of a Year 11 student at our school). Joeffrey has extensive experience leading organisations and we are excited to have him join our parents in providing feedback and assisting in ways to improve our school. Thank you for stepping into this important role.
Special mention must go to our wonderful outgoing President Mrs Toni-Maree Dodd, who has been a very long serving member of not only our P&C, but that of Walkerston where her children attended Primary School. I cannot personally thank Toni-Maree enough for welcoming me as the Principal of Mackay SHS in 2020 and for working alongside to support our school in everything we are aiming to achieve. We are doing a special ‘thank you and farewell’ to Toni-Maree at our next P&C Meeting (25th July) and would encourage all past and present members to attend, along with inviting any new members along.
Minister for Education, Industrial Relations and Racing Honourable Grace Grace and Local State MP for Mackay, Julianne Gilbert visit Mackay State High School
On Tuesday we were excited to welcome the Honourable Grace Grace, Minister for Education and Minister for Industrial Relations and Minister for Racing and Julianne Gilbert, Member for Mackay to Mackay SHS.
I was able to take Minister Grace on a tour of our wonderful school, while she chatted with our Senior Prefects, visited our Clontarf Academy and meet with the Elders of our community. She popped in to wish our Instrumental Students all the best at Fanfare before inspecting the newly installed ‘Share the Dignity’ Vending machine in the Senior girl’s toilets. We were proud to share some of our Mackay High story with her.
Fanfare Success!
Our Instrumental Music staff and students have again done an outstanding job competing in the Fanfare Festival heats on Tuesday. Concert band received a Silver award, and Symphonic Band, Big Band and String Ensemble all received a Gold Award! We are truly proud of these results and the hard work put in over many months preparing.
Over 100 students participated and did a fine job producing a high standard of music for the adjudicator. Congratulations and thank you to our amazing Instrumental Music teachers and instructors, Ms Kristen Pengelly, Ms Nicole Pasquale, Ms Priscilla Catling, and Mr Aaxle Carpenter. We will find out if we're in the finals by early next week (week 8). The Fanfare regional finals will be held on Monday 20th June (week 10). MACKAY HIGH PRIDE

Partnerships at Mackay State High School
Mackay State High School has welcomed three new partnerships this month:
In 2021, a team lead by our Head of Department Teaching and Learning, Dianne Watt, applied for funding to ‘Schools Plus’, a Sydney-based organisation who source and administer grants to schools in targeted areas. At the end of last year, we found out we were successful in receiving a $30 000 grant to run a STEM Project in our school, funded by Google! Google has an interest in promoting school engagement in Digital Technologies and in STEM areas. Our official project goal is: to promote STEM engagement for students in the Academic Excellence Academy through professional development for staff and workshops/incursions for students, culminating in a STEM fair, which showcases student critical and creative thinking and utilisation of a Design Inquiry process.
We have been utilising this funding to run STEM Workshops for our Academic Excellence students through STEM Punks, who have also offered PD for STEM teachers here at the school.
On Tuesday 7th June, Schools Plus and Google are coming to Mackay SHS to ‘launch’ our STEM project and celebrate the grant funding we have received from them. This involves a series of speeches and presentations by Google/Schools Plus Executives, followed by cake cutting, media opportunities and careers talks to Senior General Science students. STEM Punks will also be here in the school, running workshops for Yr 7-9 Academic Excellence Academy students.
Mackay SHS students have been given the opportunity to enrol in a fully funded pilot VET course developed by the Queensland Future Skills Partnership (a collaboration between BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), TAFE Queensland and CQUniversity Australia). Our students have been invited into the new Certificate II in Autonomous Technologies Pilot Program. This qualification provides industry skills and career pathways in autonomous technologies, mining and Mining, Equipment, Technologies and Services (METS). We are very proud to have 21 Year 10 students enrol in this amazing opportunity. If you would like to know any information, please do not hesitate to contact our wonderful Transitions Officer, Mrs Diane Veitch in the Senior School Hub.
And last week, The Mackay Cutters proudly announced a formal partnership with Mackay State High School commencing 2023. This partnership links Mackay State High School’s Rugby League Academy with the Mackay Cutters Pathways Program and centralised-coaching system. The formal partnership will see mutual benefit for both the Mackay Cutters and Mackay SHS where shared facilities and resources will see Mackay SHS as a training base for our Junior Representative programs.
This will increase the opportunities for players and staff in the Mackay region to pursue their rugby league goals. The partnership is aimed at developing local talent through a streamlined junior pathways program into the Mackay Cutters. It is hoped that the hub established at our school will be the first of three hubs, with satellite programs also planned for two other areas as the Cutters look to broaden their pathways footprint. We are very excited to be involved in this initiative.
We are a truly amazing school that offers our students many opportunities.
Assessment Period
Finally, a very quick reminder that as we move into Week 8, students in all year levels are working on assessment. I would encourage you to check your child’s assessment planners so that you can assist them in their organisation and preparation for exams and assignments. If your child doesn’t have an assessment planner, please contact the office and we will organise a copy to be emailed home.
Semester 1 report cards will be issued at the start of Week 3 next term.
Thank you for a wonderful Term 2.
We Believe … We Achieve
Yours in Education

CLONTARF ACADEMY
Clontarf Hosts QLD Minister for Education
The Mackay Academy were honoured to host the Qld Minister for Education, the Hon. Grace Grace. It was an exciting time for the Mackay Academy following on from our visit to QLD Parliament House last term. The Minister for Education was joined by the Member for Mackay, the Hon. Julianne Gilbert. It was a great opportunity to not only celebrate with our school community but to reciprocate the hospitality shown to us when we visited parliament last term. We would like to thank our Principal, Mrs. Felicity Roberts for making this possible. Our community elders for their support. Present on the day were, Uncle Gordon Quakawoot, Aunty Marion Healy and Uncle George Tonga. Aunty Marion was able to treat us all to some afternoon tea with her famous damper. It was truly a great afternoon of talking story and sharing a bit of our Mackay story.

Clontarf Working
Within our Clontarf Academies we want to celebrate the successes of our young men. In the space of employment and vocational studies these successes have been able to be captured through our “Pillar” photo boards. We would like to welcome our school community, parents and corporate partners and any others that are interested to take a tour of our academy room to hear some of these stories. This also gives an opportunity for our young men to be able to yarn and explain the various opportunities that they are engaged in. Here are some of the stories of our lads in school-based Traineeships/Apprenticeships/Cadetships and those studying at TAFE.

HEROS IN HEALTH
Over the two-day program students visited the operating theatre and maternity ward, learned about hand hygiene and removal of staples, checked out blood pressure and blood sugar levels and discovered more about airway management. They toured the hospital, found out how to educate patients on medication management and helped their fellow students to get up off the ground!
They also heard from professionals including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, sports and exercise scientists and pharmacists about their profession in the healthcare industry and their career journeys so far.
