Snr Constable Shane Eggmolesse, our School-Based Police Officer, spoke to our students and staff on our school assembly last week about student safety. In his talk that he is taking to all secondary schools in Mackay, Shane focusses on schools being Assault Free Zones. He has committed his involvement with school staff to ensure this is a reality and where there are individuals who break this goal, he will be having meetings with these students. “Eggy” will be visiting schools and working with students regularly. Snr Sergeant Nigel Dalton spoke to our Year 7 students about their responsibility in their behaviour in using Social Media, to ensure they are safe and are not putting others at risk.
Assessment Planners were distributed to students this week. I encourage parents/carers to ensure that they keep a copy of the documents for your student’s Semester 1 assessments, so that you can follow-up with their progress, especially when there are busy weeks, to assist with pre-planning.
Our Prefects joined with Leadership groups from other schools across Mackay for GRIP Leadership training at the MECC. Our nominated Leaders participated in a range of whole group activities as well as small group sessions, requiring them to focus on the goals which they intend personally as well as for their peers and also the school.
MSP staff took all of our students who were in attendance on Thursday and Friday and took their photo. The staff collected the photo envelopes from students over the two days and before the end of the term, Photo packs will be delivered to school for distribution to families. Student ID Cards are also part of the arrangement with the school and when received will be supplied to all students in attendance at school.
Mr Alan Huthison, representing the Freemasons of Mackay, presented prestigious Clark Bursaries to Amber Edwards & Lauren Anderson. Each year the Clark Bursary is presented to students in their final year of High School, to assist them to achieve their very best. Congratulations to Amber and Lauren and I am sure that they will be worthy recipients.
This week our Interhouse Swimming carnival was held with a large number of students attending and also participating in competitive races as well as novelty events in and out of the pool. Chataway were the overall winner on the day and congratulations to the Age Champions, who will receive their medals at the Sports Awards Night later in the year. Thank you to the students for their involvement and the staff for their great efforts in making the day such a success.

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING
Medication at School
If your student requires medication while at school, there a couple of steps that need to be followed.
Step 1
Complete paperwork:
- Administration of Medication Forms are available from the general office. They must be completed by a doctor and parent/guardian and returned with the medication to the First Aid Officer at the school office.
Step 2
- Medication needs to be obtained from a chemist. Medication must have a Chemist label, with the students name on it and listing the medication and instructions and be dated the current year affixed to the packet/container.
Unwell Students
Please instruct your student that if they are sick they MUST come to the school office and the office staff will phone and make arrangements with you for your child to be collected. Students are NOT to use their own mobile phone to contact parents or they will be issued with an eDevice infringement. This process saves valuable time for office staff as they don’t have the resources to go looking for students who are not in sick bay.
STUDENT MESSAGES
Please arrange with your child PRIOR TO SCHOOL any changes or appointments to their day. Only UNFORSEEN CRITICAL EMERGENT messages will be delivered to students.
Late for School/Leave Pass
The student is required to bring a note if they are late for school or need to leave for an appointment. The note is taken to the Attendance Office and the student is then given either a late pass or a leave request. If the student is leaving school early the request is then taken to the office at the time of departure where a parent/guardian can collect the student from the office.
Second Hand Uniforms
We are always in need of any 2nd hand uniforms, for students that have the incorrect uniform, we can do a quick fix with a loan uniform through the Year Coordinators room. The loan uniform is then returned to the school in a clean condition. If you have any Senior or Junior shirts and shorts we would be most grateful, just bring into the General office.
SENIOR SCHOOLING
Assessment Planners have been handed out to all students this week. It is a good opportunity for you to help your student to plan their time to ensure they are meeting the requirements for classwork and assessment this semester. With the revised MSHS Assessment Policy introduced in 2019, it is important that students meet deadlines for both drafts and final copies of assessment to give them the best chance of success. We do have the opportunity to provide special provision or AARA (Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustment) in cases of genuine need for students eg illness or bereavement. Forms are available in E06 or at the office if you believe that your child needs some variation to their assessment demands. Reminder that extended family vacations during the school term WILL NOT be considered grounds for special provision. Therefore, extensions to assessment requirements for students will not be granted. If you choose to take your child out of school for a vacation, then they will be required to submit assessment on the day/time that it is due for everyone.
If your child does fall ill, it is important that we are provided with appropriate information to help your child. The following information needs to be provided from a medical professional to help assist us your child complete their assessment:
- Diagnosis of disability and/or medical condition
- Date of diagnosis
- Date of occurrence or onset of the disability and/or medical condition
- Symptoms, treatment or course of action related to the disability and/or medical condition
- Information about how the diagnosed disability, impairment and/or medical condition affects the student participating in assessment, particularly timed assessment when considering external assessment
Professional recommendations regarding assistance that needs to be provided by the school
Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority has created a new website to help Year 10 and 11 students plan their pathways. My QCE can be found in the link below. My QCE will help students plan their pathway to achieving a QCE by the end of Year 12 and explore further study, training and career options. I highly recommend that students and parents take some time to look at the information provided in myQCE.

Assessment Policy
Mackay SHS has upgraded its Assessment Policy for all students to align with the introduction of the new senior curriculum. A full copy of the policy is in all student diaries and has also been included in this newsletter. It is important that all students and parents are familiar with the content of the policy to ensure that assessment requirements in all subjects are met. Some of the main points to note about the assessment policy include:
Draft Dates
A draft is a preliminary version of a student’s response to an assessment instrument. The quality of a draft is considered to be a response that is at or nearing completion.
It is a school-wide expectation for all students to submit a draft that meets task requirement for all assessment items. Drafting can be submitted electronically or in print, as required on the task sheet. If printed, draft work will be photocopied and retained as a record of the student work for marking if a final submission is not submitted by the due date.
Students are to ensure that all stages of the assessment are saved in multiple places and backed up appropriately.
Final Due Dates
All assessment will be scheduled on a timetabled lesson day. Written Assessment is to be submitted in print or electronically at the start of the designated lesson, on the due date, as required on the task sheet. Performance Based Assessment, including Practical Assessment, must have a script, plan or project submitted in print or electronically on the due date and presented as required by the task sheet.
Students must submit work that is their own in order to demonstrate knowledge and skills. Responses that are not the student’s own work cannot be used to make a judgement. Refer to the section on Academic Misconduct for further details.
When a student fails to submit assessment, electronically or in print by the due date, then the school will make judgements using evidence available on or before the due date.
Special Provision/AARA (Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustment)
‘Special provisions’ or ‘AARA’ means making reasonable adjustments to conditions of assessment to ensure equitable opportunities for all students. Special provisions may apply to any student, depending on the circumstances.
Mackay State High School will not accept late submission unless there is special provision/AARA granted by Administration/Head of Department and documented. The QCAA Special Provisions policy also is taken into consideration when student assessment is affected by illness, bereavement or other special circumstances. Special provision, in all but rare circumstances must be arranged on or before the due date, through Head of Department, HOSES, Deputy Principal/s or the Principal.
The school cannot allow the student to sit an examination after the set date, unless Special Provision/AARA is approved by Heads of Department.
In emergent situations, special provisions/AARA may be granted by relevant Heads of Departments/Administration, but the reasons must be communicated with the school on or before the designated due date for the assessment.
Extended family vacations during the school term WILL NOT be considered grounds for special provision. Therefore, extensions to assessment requirements for students will not be granted. If you choose to take your child out of school for a vacation, then they will be required to submit assessment on the day/time that it is due for everyone.
Computer, printer or storage failure are not grounds for Special Provision.
Students who participate in regular activities outside of school, for example TAFE, MEC, School-Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship must meet assessment requirements by the due date. Priority must be given to meeting school assessment requirements on or before the due date.
Students attending work experience must meet assessment requirements by the due date.
Students attending organised school sport must apply for Special Provision prior to the due date using the Special Provision Application Form.
Please refer to the full version of the MSHS Assessment Policy which is included in this newsletter.

USI (Unique Student Identifier)
The USI (Unique Student Identifier) was introduced nationally on 1 January 2015 for all students studying VET qualifications. The school is not permitted to issue Statements of Attainment or Certificates unless students have a USI recorded with Mackay State High School.
A USI is effectively an account or 10 character alpha-numeric reference which will allow all of an individual’s training records, entered in the National Vocational Education and Training (VET) data collection, to be linked. The USI will make it easier for students to find, collate and authenticate their VET achievements into a single transcript. It will also ensure that students’ VET records are not lost.
Forms were given to all year 10 students in the first week of school and must be returned as soon as possible. A quick guide on How to Create a USI was also given to the student. The student will need ID such as a birth certificate, passport or medicare card to be able to create their USI. When the student has their number it is to be recorded on the sheet provided, signed by student and parent and returned to Mrs Esau in E6. Anyone having trouble doing this can bring their ID to Mrs Esau in E6 and help will be given to create their USI.

Swimming Carnival
The MSHS annual inter-house swimming carnival was held on Tuesday 19th February at the Memorial Pool. The house swimming participation events were a great success, with the additional novelty events implemented by the house captains. An important message of participation was imparted to encourage each house member to gain as many points as they could for the carnival. Student attendance rates were fantastic, with over 750 students on the day. The Australiana theme was well supported by students and staff. A big Thankyou to Kellie Biddle who oversaw the organisation of the carnival as a lot of work goes into these days. In addition, a special thank you to all of the teachers for your efforts in the management of this event, as carnivals would not be able to go ahead without your support. Thanks to Aidan Watt who provided the staff and students with music and entertainment from the DJ tent. Thank you Aidan for your efforts.

Year 9 Physical Education
‘BODY SYSTEMS’
During Term 1 the Year 9 students have been working through the different systems that make up our body to help us during exercise. The students cover the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, circulatory and the energy systems. During the course of the unit students will be able to identify and label the parts of the systems and develop their knowledge of how each system forms to allow the body to function optimally at rest as well as exercising at low and high intensities. Each student will be able to link the use of the systems in the body back to their individual sports whether it be an individual or team sport.
‘INVASION GAMES’
In the practical component of Term 1, Year 9 students will participate in a range of different invasion games. This unit focuses on any sport where a team is invading the territory of another team in the aim or scoring more points. The student will work with class mates in a range of different sports including minor games, rugby, hockey, basketball, netball, ultimate Frisbee etc. in the effort to improve their team work skills.
Year 10 Core Physical Education
The Topic overview for Health and Physical Education: Year 10 Unit 1 — Looking after myself and others aligns with the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education for Years 9–10 Band and considers the local context and needs of students. Focus areas addressed in the unit include:
- mental health and wellbeing
- relationships and sexuality safety
For our practical sessions, this unit will identify and develop the specialised skills of gridiron. Through practice, observation and applying feedback to students they will refine and apply these skills. These skills will be demonstrated in game situations.
Year 10 Extension Physical Education
The Year 10 Health & Physical Education Extension class have this term been studying Human Anatomy & Biomechanics. This unit begins to develop the students for the next step in to Senior Physical Education and looks at the body as a machine when applying it to sport. The theory has been paired with Badminton for term 1, a sport that is quite foreign to a lot of the students. This activity links in beautifully with our topic of study as we have been identifying how biomechanics can be applied to badminton and the techniques and outcomes of the students can be improve when applying biomechanical principles.
Sports Trials Information
As a reminder, it is the responsibility of the Parents / Guardians to contact the school and explain your child’s absence, when they are representing at all sporting events / trials. As unexpected circumstance may occur resulting in your child not attending a trial. This is also to ensure an accurate attendance is recorded for your child. JUNIOR SECONDARY NEWS
General News
I am very proud to say our Year 7 student body is settling in to routines very well, and as usual, setting a great example of behaviour and attitude for the rest of the school. They are keen, punctual, courteous, polite and respectful of each other. I certainly hope we can keep this going for the year and beyond, and that some of our older students remember when they were in year 7, starting high school with good habits.
What's On Soon
Students in years 7 - 9 will be bring home a letter advertising our first social event for the year. We hold a disco in term 1 to celebrate the start of the new school year.
This year, it will be held on Wednesday 6th March, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm. It is for students of Mackay SHS only. Any student with poor behaviour at school will not be allowed to attend.
School disco's are not a relic of the 1980's, but a lot of fun with socialising and dance competitions. We encourage students to attend and have a fun evening.
For parents of year 7 students or those new to the school, there will also be an information session in our Auditorium starting at 6:00pm, covering key aspects of secondary school life. Check our facebook site closer to the date.
Good News Stories
The Swimming carnival saw many year 7's in attendance. Given that it was a normal school day, all students should have attended. Kudos to those who did for being part of the school team.
Student News
The process of recruiting and selecting Junior Secondary Leaders for 2019 has just begun. This is a great opportunity for year 7, 8 and 9 students to develop their leadership skills and have input in to the running of the student body.
To back up the Leader positions, we also run student council, which is available for students in ALL year levels to participate in. It is another great opportunity for students to use and gain teamwork and leadership skills.
Both Junior Secondary leaders and Student Council meet fortnightly.
We are also developing some other leadership and teamwork initiatives to trial this year to help our Junior Secondary students become more proactive in developing a great school culture and having more peer based influence on their school and learning environments.
Thought of the Newsletter
Year Coordinators
Year 7 students have made a positive start this year! Our teachers are commenting about how responsive they are in class, and they are certainly community conscious in the yard. They show care for each other and their environment without any prompting. Their Senior Buddies are enjoying the Year 7’s positive responses to the help offered.
A reminder to parents that students’ lunches can be ordered online for students to be pick up at the canteen. Students can use cash, but parents can register at Flexi Schools and pay online.
Parents are encouraged to give us a call any day after school if they would like to chat about their students. Last week all our support staff – Guidance Officer, Nurse and Chappie Phil came to each Year 7 class and introduced themselves, explaining what they do in their roles.
Immunisations are coming up in March. Most students have returned their forms. If you have not signed and returned one for your child, and haven’t seen one, they are in the General Office. Immunisations are free.
Diaries. Homework is written in student diaries. If you want to communicate in writing with a teacher, you may like to use the diary to send a message. There is a section for Absence and Late notes from parents.
Students absences and lateness to school – must have be acknowledged by parents – writing a note in diary, calling the Absence Line, or emailing a teacher.

ICT SERVICES
EQUITY LAPTOP PROGRAM 2019
The Equity Laptop Program will be operating in 2019 with a limited number of devices. Families who are experiencing hardship can apply for a device by having their student pick up the Equity Information Pack and Application Form from ICT Services during week three and four, Monday 11 February to Thursday 21 February. These forms will need to be returned by Friday 22 February.
In the packs provided to students is some information on alternate options for purchasing a device. We strongly encourage parents and families to utilise these options as they provide the student with a device of their own and these can often be of much better quality than the equity devices that the school has to provide.
Families and students please be aware that as available devices are limited, applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The devices available are now of some age and as the year goes on replacements may not be available. Applications received outside of the above dates may not be accepted.
BYOx On-boarding
Thank you to the many students and parents who have already brought in their devices to ICT Services for on-boarding. A number of issues with Microsoft and Windows Versions have slowed
This process down and devices are sometimes being worked on over multiple days. We thank parents and students for their patience and understanding while we continue to work through this process.
If you are yet to on-board your device, this process can be quicker if the student has completed all updates and ensured that their version of Windows is registered and no longer in ‘S’ mode. Where possible ICT Services will help do this however it does mean the student may have to leave their device in for longer to be on-boarded. Video’s on how to update can be found on the school website in the BYOx Information. Thank you again for your patience.
YEAR 10 CO-ORDINATOR
Senior Jersey Orders
Senior jersey orders are now open for year 10, 11 and 12 students. Jersey order forms have been distributed to students and need to be returned with payment by the 4th March. Due to the time constraints involved with submitting our order to the supplier no late orders will be accepted. See Mrs Atkins for details.
Year 10 Immunisations
All Year 10 students have received immunisation forms. Students should get these forms completed and handed into the general office by 12th February.

Year 10 Co-Ordinator
NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM
From the 2nd-13th of January, I travelled to Canberra for session A of the National Youth Science Forum, along with 200 other students from all around Australia, including 4 others from Mackay. NYSF is a program run by rotary, designed for students passionate in the field of science to get a sense of the career opportunities available in a wide range of STEM fields. I was supported by the Port of Mackay Rotary Club, who not only endorsed my application but made a significant contribution to my program fee. Session A was held at the Australian National University, where we stayed on campus and did most of our lab visits and lectures. I was assigned to a chemistry interest group, and participated in visits to the CSIRO, ANU Chemistry Research School and ICON Water treatment facility. I also had the opportunity to participate in elective visits and lectures in the areas of exercise science, climate change, international development, zoology, a video conference with CERN (the European Centre for Nuclear Research) and film preservation, which was held at the National Film and Sound Archive (I really enjoyed this one!). We also did many activities based around personal development, public speaking and how to plan for the future. Night time activities ranged from learning to swing dance to basketball, music and the science disco (way cooler than it sounds, trust me!). There were also 3 formal occasions, the highlight being the Science Dinner where the keynote speaker was Dr Megan Clark, head of the Australian Space Agency.
All of these experiences were incredible and something I will never forget, but the best part of NYSF was the lifelong friendships I have formed with students from Darwin, to Perth and just about everywhere in between. Before I went to NYSF, I heard many people talk about what a life-changing experience it was and thought to myself “Surely a science camp hasn’t changed their life that much”. Now I can truly see what they were talking about. Life changing just doesn’t do NYSF justice.
Applications for current year 11 students open on March 1, and I urge any year 11 science students who may be interested to apply – you certainly won’t regret it!
