PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Welcome to the 2019 school year and by this stage the students and staff are already settling into the routines and learning in their classes. We are so proud to welcome over 180 new Year 7 students to Mackay SHS and talking to many of the students during their first week, they are confidently making new friendships and commencing their secondary education. We have also welcomed a larger than usual number of new enrolments for families new to Mackay. Our Senior buddies have made a major contribution in the start weeks, working with the classes on their first day and then checking with their students later in the week, assisting students to confidently settle in.
We also welcome a number of new staff and during the term in each of the newsletters, a couple of the new members of our team will give a brief profile. Some of the teachers have already distributed letters to parents, introducing themselves and the learning program for Term 1.
The wet weather has been a feature of our return to school. I ask parents who collect their children from school especially in the afternoons, to arrange an alternative pick-up from the school frontage area. Options are Penn St, English St and Kenilworth St, where there is good visibility and allows the MTC coaches to move through. It is vital that vehicles move through the street and park on the school side of the street, to allow the traffic to move through. The school frontage is a busy place and patience is vital.
The new school sign was installed in the week prior to school and is a major feature provided by our P&C Association. This group is a vital part of the success of our great school and their team is always seeking interested and committed parents for our monthly meetings. Our first meeting is scheduled for 6pm Mon 25th February and we would like to see some of our new parents attend. The Tuckshop and Uniform Shop are managed through the P&C for the benefit of our students and if you can offer to volunteer some time to assist the staff, call on 49579127 during school hours.
Congratulations to the Year 12 class of 2018, who achieved 100% QCE/QCIA, a big achievement for a school with 150 graduates. Kacey Westcott achieved an OP 1, and like many other students, is preparing to head off to University, to commence her chosen course.
In addition to this, the academic performance in Semester 2 last year was quality across the board with the percentage of students gaining ratings A-C reaching very pleasing levels.

MSP will be attending our school on Thursday and Friday 14/15th February to take our student photos for 2019. All students will have their photo taken over the two days and this week students have been provided with envelopes with order details if you wish to purchase one of the quality packs. Order envelopes are required to be brought in to MSP staff on the days of their visits. In a few weeks after the photos are taken, students will all be issued with personal School ID Cards.
Our Leaders Investiture ceremony was held this week with our special guest being former Senior, Councillor Ross Walker. Many of the 2019 Leaders’ parents and family members were present to see the students give the Oath of Office and receive their badges for 2019. I commend and congratulate

GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING
Medication at School
If your student requires medication while at school, there a couple of steps that need to be followed.
Step 1
Complete paperwork:
- Administration of Medication Forms are available from the general office. They must be completed by a doctor and parent/guardian and returned with the medication to the First Aid Officer at the school office.
Step 2
- Medication needs to be obtained from a chemist. Medication must have a Chemist label, with the students name on it and listing the medication and instructions and be dated the current year affixed to the packet/container.
Unwell Students
Please instruct your student that if they are sick they MUST come to the school office and the office staff will phone and make arrangements with you for your child to be collected. Students are NOT to use their own mobile phone to contact parents or they will be issued with an eDevice infringement. This process saves valuable time for office staff as they don’t have the resources to go looking for students who are not in sick bay.
STUDENT MESSAGES
Please arrange with your child PRIOR TO SCHOOL any changes or appointments to their day. Only UNFORSEEN CRITICAL EMERGENT messages will be delivered to students.
Late for School/Leave Pass
The student is required to bring a note if they are late for school or need to leave for an appointment. The note is taken to the Attendance Office and the student is then given either a late pass or a leave request. If the student is leaving school early the request is then taken to the office at the time of departure where a parent/guardian can collect the student from the office.
Second Hand Uniforms
We are always in need of any 2nd hand uniforms, for students that have the incorrect uniform, we can do a quick fix with a loan uniform through the Year Coordinators room. The loan uniform is then returned to the school in a clean condition. If you have any Senior or Junior shirts and shorts we would be most grateful, just bring into the General office.
SENIOR SCHOOLING
Welcome to 2019 to the students in Years 10, 11 and 12, who are the Senior students at Mackay SHS!
Our Year 12 students are the last ever cohort who will be completing the existing QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) system, including those doing the last ever QCS test and getting an OP for the final time.
All Year 12 students were issued with their own QCE Action Plan last Wednesday. It outlined their Year 11 results, along with any VET (Vocational Education and Training) completed. To receive a QCE, students must achieve at least 20 QCE credits, 12 core credits, and meet literacy and numeracy requirements. Students were categorised as either:
Safe – students currently tracking to receive more than 26 QCE credits and meet all other requirements. If these students maintain their results they will get a QCE.
Watch – students currently tracking to received 20-25 QCE credits and meet all other requirements. If these students maintain their results they will get a QCE.
At Risk – students not currently on track to receive a QCE due to either tracking to receive less than 20 credits and/or less than 12 core credits and/or not meeting literacy and/or numeracy requirements. If these students maintain these results they will not get a QCE.
Your child should be able to show you a copy of their QCE Action Plan. If you would like a copy of this document, please email me on sbarn53@eq.edu.au, and I will send you a copy.
Year 12 OP eligible students have commenced their QCS practice. The classes are period 2 on Wednesday and period 3 on Friday. They will practice a range of questions to help prepare for the test in September 2019. All OP eligible students will need to purchase a QCS Success textbook to use in their lessons. If an older brother/sister/friend has a copy of the textbook, they are able to use their copy, as long as it is version 9. Details about purchasing QCS Success were sent home in a letter with students last week. We have booked dates for QCS full day workshops. OP eligible Students are required to attend these full day workshops at school:
Friday 22 February 2019 – Matt
Rigby
Wednesday 1 May 2019 – Bill and Chris
Gilmore
Wednesday 26 June 2019 – Matt Rigby
Our Year 11 students are the first ever cohort to study under the new QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) system. Those who wish to go to university after Year 12 will now work towards an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank).
It is very important that the Year 11 students are in the correct classes to ensure they can prepare for their future pathways. If you have any concerns about the subjects that your child is studying, please contact Sharon Barnard on 4957 9134.
Subject Changes
Year 11 and Year 12 students are able to change subjects until the 8th February 2019. They are able to change to another subject on the same line, as long as there is room in the class. Those students who wish to change subject need to:
Collect a subject change form from either Mrs Barnard in E06 or the office. The yellow form is for Year 11 and the violet form is for Year 12.
Write down why they want to change subject and how the new subject will help them.
Go to their current subject teacher and HOD to get signatures to approve the change.
Go to the HOD of the new subject to discuss and get a signature.
Take form home for parent to sign if they agree to the subject change.
Take form to Mrs Barnard in E06 for discussion and processing. Subject changes will be processed and changes effective the following day.
Collect new timetable from E06 the following day and commence new subject.
If you have any questions/concerns in relation to subject changes, please contact Sharon Barnard on 4957 9134.
Assessment Policy
Mackay SHS has upgraded it’s Assessment Policy for all students to align with the introduction of the new senior curriculum. A full copy of the policy is in all student diaries and has also been included in this newsletter. It is important that all students and parents are familiar with the content of the policy to ensure that assessment requirements in all subjects are met. Some of the main points to note about the assessment policy include:
Draft Dates
A draft is a preliminary version of a student’s response to an assessment instrument. The quality of a draft is considered to be a response that is at or nearing completion.
It is a school-wide expectation for all students to submit a draft that meets task requirement for all assessment items. Drafting can be submitted electronically or in print, as required on the task sheet. If printed, draft work will be photocopied and retained as a record of the student work for marking if a final submission is not submitted by the due date.
Students are to ensure that all stages of the assessment are saved in multiple places and backed up appropriately.
Final Due Dates
All assessment will be scheduled on a timetabled lesson day. Written Assessment is to be submitted in print or electronically at the start of the designated lesson, on the due date, as required on the task sheet. Performance Based Assessment, including Practical Assessment, must have a script, plan or project submitted in print or electronically on the due date and presented as required by the task sheet.
Students must submit work that is their own in order to demonstrate knowledge and skills. Responses that are not the student’s own work cannot be used to make a judgement. Refer to the section on Academic Misconduct for further details.
When a student fails to submit assessment, electronically or in print by the due date, then the school will make judgements using evidence available on or before the due date.
Special Provision/AARA (Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustment)
‘Special provisions’ or ‘AARA’ means making reasonable adjustments to conditions of assessment to ensure equitable opportunities for all students. Special provisions may apply to any student, depending on the circumstances.
Mackay State High School will not accept late submission unless there is special provision/AARA granted by Administration/Head of Department and documented. The QCAA Special Provisions policy also is taken into consideration when student assessment is affected by illness, bereavement or other special circumstances. Special provision, in all but rare circumstances must be arranged on or before the due date, through Head of Department, HOSES, Deputy Principal/s or the Principal.
The school cannot allow the student to sit an examination after the set date, unless Special Provision/AARA is approved by Heads of Department.
In emergent situations, special provisions/AARA may be granted by relevant Heads of Departments/Administration, but the reasons must be communicated with the school on or before the designated due date for the assessment.
Extended family vacations during the school term WILL NOT be considered grounds for special provision. Therefore, extensions to assessment requirements for students will not be granted. If you choose to take your child out of school for a vacation, then they will be required to submit assessment on the day/time that it is due for everyone.
Computer, printer or storage failure are not grounds for Special Provision.
Students who participate in regular activities outside of school, for example TAFE, MEC, School-Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship must meet assessment requirements by the due date. Priority must be given to meeting school assessment requirements on or before the due date.
Students attending work experience must meet assessment requirements by the due date.
Students attending organised school sport must apply for Special Provision prior to the due date using the Special Provision Application Form.
Please refer to the full version of the MSHS Assessment Policy which is included in this newsletter.

USI (Unique Student Identifier)
The USI (Unique Student Identifier) was introduced nationally on 1 January 2015 for all students studying VET qualifications. The school is not permitted to issue Statements of Attainment or Certificates unless students have a USI recorded with Mackay State High School.
A USI is effectively an account or 10 character alpha-numeric reference which will allow all of an individual’s training records, entered in the National Vocational Education and Training (VET) data collection, to be linked. The USI will make it easier for students to find, collate and authenticate their VET achievements into a single transcript. It will also ensure that students’ VET records are not lost.
Forms were given to all year 10 students in the first week of school and must be returned as soon as possible. A quick guide on How to Create a USI was also given to the student. The student will need ID such as a birth certificate, passport or medicare card to be able to create their USI. When the student has their number it is to be recorded on the sheet provided, signed by student and parent and returned to Mrs Esau in E6. Anyone having trouble doing this can bring their ID to Mrs Esau in E6 and help will be given to create their USI.
Year 12 Work Experience
Year 12 Work Experience will take place from 11 – 15 March (Week 7 of Term 1).
These work placements allow students to experience the use of new and different equipment and technologies, and to develop a positive work ethic for future employment. Structured Workplace Learning also gives the student the opportunity to put into practice skills learned in the classroom. We have had many success stories from students participating in work experience with placements leading to part time work or school based apprenticeships and traineeships.
Students have been advised of the dates for Work Experience and application forms can be collected by the student from Mrs Esau in E6.
KP Placements will arrange the location for the students in their preferred field. The cost for this service is $37.00 which is to be paid in cash to the school office prior to the application being accepted. To allow time for these placements to be made, the application and receipt of payment are to be handed to Mrs Esau in E6 no later than Thursday 14 February.

ICT SERVICES
EQUITY LAPTOP PROGRAM 2019
The Equity Laptop Program will be operating in 2019 with a limited number of devices. Families who are experiencing hardship can apply for a device by having their student pick up the Equity Information Pack and Application Form from ICT Services during week three and four, Monday 11 February to Thursday 21 February. These forms will need to be returned by Friday 22 February.
In the packs provided to students is some information on alternate options for purchasing a device. We strongly encourage parents and families to utilise these options as they provide the student with a device of their own and these can often be of much better quality than the equity devices that the school has to provide.
Families and students please be aware that as available devices are limited, applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. The devices available are now of some age and as the year goes on replacements may not be available. Applications received outside of the above dates may not be accepted.
BYOx On-boarding
Thank you to the many students and parents who have already brought in their devices to ICT Services for on-boarding. A number of issues with Microsoft and Windows Versions have slowed
this process down and devices are sometimes being worked on over multiple days. We thank parents and students for their patience and understanding while we continue to work through this process.
If you are yet to on-board your device, this process can be quicker if the student has completed all updates and ensured that their version of Windows is registered and no longer in ‘S’ mode. Where possible ICT Services will help do this however it does mean the student may have to leave their device in for longer to be on-boarded. Video’s on how to update can be found on the school website in the BYOx Information. Thank you again for your patience.
YEAR 10 CO-ORDINATOR
Senior Jersey Orders
Senior jersey orders are now open for year 10, 11 and 12 students. Jersey order forms have been distributed to students and need to be returned with payment by the 4th March. Due to the time constraints involved with submitting our order to the supplier no late orders will be accepted. See Mrs Atkins for details.
Year 10 Immunisations
All Year 10 students have received immunisation forms. Students should get these forms completed and handed into the general office by 12th February.

Sports Trials Information
Term one is exceptionally busy with a number of 13-19yrs Mackay District School Sports and Southern Suburbs trails. Students are required to collect selection nominations from the HPE staff room in R block. They need to fill in the required information on the ‘sign on sheet’ and then take the trail paper work home to be filled in and signed. This is then returned to the main school office where payment will be made and receipted. It is very important that the correct process is followed to ensure accurate information is obtained about the students relevant playing experience and the paper work is recorded and signed off by Mr Paulger principal, by the nomination due date. If paper work is submitted after the nomination due date it will not be accepted and therefore the student will not be able to participate in the trial. Exemption forms can be collected from Miss Russell where students can submit if there has been an unexpected circumstance, a doctor’s certificate or letter from the principal, coach etc will need to be attached to this form before submitting. If you have any queries please contact Miss Russell on 49579024
Mackay District School Sports Calendar 13 -19 Years
Congratulations Dawson Harch
Dawson travelled to Cairns to compete at the 2018 Australian All Schools Championships from the 7th - 9th of December. This was the second year he has made it to Nationals in the QLD team. Dawson effort was exceptional, he ran in the U 18' s which consisted of 16 and 17 yr olds, meaning he was the lower end of the age group. He placed 5th in his 100m heat which meant he didn't make it through to the final but ranked 12th fastest out of 22. His stronger event is his 200m. He placed 4th in his heat and his time qualified him for the final. There were some very strong 17 yr olds in this event and he ran well coming in 5th in the final. He also competed in the 4 x 100m relay. His team came away with the Gold medal for that event. Nice to come home with a medal!
Junior Health & Physical Education Information
Year 7
‘Can I Make Good Decisions’ is the unit of work that the grade 7 students will be working through during the theoretical component of Health and Physical Education in Term 1. Students will analyse factors that influence emotional responses, demonstrate skills to make informed decisions and propose and implement actions to promote their own and others Health and Safety. This unit provides students with vital information surrounding making informed healthy decisions and gives practical skills to assist students and their communities to improve mental health.
‘In the Running’ is the practical element of Health and Physical Education in Term 1. In this unit, students develop and perform specialised running (sprinting / relays), throwing (Shot Put / Javelin / Discus ) and jumping skills (long jump / Tipple Jump). They explore the elements of movement and use feedback to improve accuracy and control.
Due to the inclement weather the grade 7 students have participated in various group challenges during the first few practical lessons. Please see in the photos below.

Year 8
Within Health and Physical Education our year 8 students work through a practical and a theory component. This term our theory unit is mental health where students analyse and research current information on mental health and available services in the community, apply health information, and propose and justify ways to manage mental health. This unit provides students with vital information surrounding mental health and gives practical skills to assist students and their communities to improve mental health.
Our practical unit is ‘implemented sports’ and will include a wide range of sports. This unit allows students to develop ball skills that incorporate running, catching, jumping and throwing skills, as well as hand eye coordination. Through the various games of implemented sports students will start to develop team work and communication skills. Along with these essential skills, the year 8’s are developing their tactical decision making and awareness.
Assessments
Just a reminder to all parents and guardians, all PE subjects are marked equally on both the Practical aspect (consistent demonstration of physical skills) and the Theoretical (the health / well-being unit of study) and for this reason it is vital that all students apply themselves equally in each element. Quite often students find one aspect of this learning area much easier than the other and therefore not employ the same work habits in the area which they find more difficult. It is vital that this isn’t the case if success in the subject as a whole is to be achieved. The moral to the story for students in PE is to NEVER GIVE UP and seek assistance from their teachers, throughout the term, to ask questions and learn what is required of them to strive to achieve to the next level. Quite often they will be surprised by the outcome if they show persistence and seek clarification in both aspects.

Swimming Carnival
The Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 19th February, where all students will meet at the Memorial Pool. If Grade 7 students are unable to get dropped off at the Memorial Pool there will be two supervised walks provided for these students. Grade 7 students will meet their form teachers in the designated undercover grade 7 area and leave the school premises at 8.30 am and a second group at 8.40am where they will walk to the Memorial Pool together as a group.
Each student will be required to provide a gold coin donation upon arrival to the Pool where their attendance will be recorded. Adequate clothing will need to be packed for all weather conditions. A swimming cap and goggles are optional items if students would like to bring them. Sun Screen will be provided; however it would be good for students to put this on before leaving home that morning, for effectiveness. All students are required to have a bucket hat for sun protection. There are limited canteen facilities and a BBQ will be run by the year 12 students where items can be purchased; however students are required to bring enough food and refreshments for the day.
There will be a range of swimming and novelty events for all students to enjoy on the day. This is a mandatory school day and a great way to foster school spirit by participating and representing the house students are allocated. If weather cancels the carnival it will be a normal school day.
2019 Sports & House Captains
The Health and Physical Education team are excited to announce the 2019 Sports and House Captains. All students are worthy recipients and we are looking forward to working alongside these students next year. Congratulations to the 2019 cohort selected, we hope you represent the school and your respective houses with pride and commitment.

STAFF PROFILES
Ms Michelle White
Hello my name is Michelle White. I have worked as a teacher in Mackay since 1999 and as a tutor since 2013. My career in Mackay began at Mackay High where I taught English, Drama and Social Science. After a career change I now teach Maths and Science. I am the owner of Mackay Tutoring. I am originally from Brisbane where I taught for 5 years after a two year period in Tasmania. I enjoy teaching and intend to remain in Mackay until my own son completes year 12 in 2023. I am always available for discussions regarding the students and find this the most useful way to mentor good teaching and learning.
Mr David Mathewson
Hello, to the Mackay State High School community. My name is David Mathewson. Previous to joining the team at Mackay I have taught at State Schools in Far North Queensland. I started teaching later in life and previous to teaching I worked in the IT and Retail industries. My passion in life is family and motor sport. I am married to my wife Sharon and have a beautiful little boy, William. In motor sport, I am fortunate enough to be Crew Chief for a Sprint Car team. It is in this role that I have visited Mackay many times in the past. My role at Mackay State High School is as the Head of Department for Vocational Education and Training (VET) and Curriculum. The primary focus of the school VET program this year is a Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways. This program is designed to help students to identify the skills and knowledge and work type they would enjoy and then relates these to possible occupations. I am really excited about this program and I often wonder what life choices I may have made if such a program was available to me when I was at school. I look forward to meeting with as many parents as possible in the coming year at Mackay State High School.
Tea Vella
To the Mackay State High School community, hello! My name is Tea Vella and I am excited to be joining the Mackay SHS team in 2019. As a former student of Mackay SHS, I am proud to be returning to our school in a different role, and to contribute to the great work of my past teachers here. My teaching areas include English and History, both of which are subjects I am passionate about learning myself. I look forward to meeting many of you at various school functions throughout the year and wish everyone a great year ahead.
ACCESS CENTRE
MATHS DEPARTMENT
It has been fantastic to see so many of our students front for their first week of school with a great attitude and all the resources that they need to be successful in class.
I’d like to take this opportunity to remind parents of year 7 and 8 students that you can now collect copies of the “Maths Mate” homework book. This resource was on the booklist and is now available from Carroll’s newsagency. Please remember that Carroll’s have moved from their old location at 106 Victoria St to their new location at shop 5/171 Victoria street. (where Barbeques Galore used to be)
This book is needed by all students in years 7 and 8.
I would also like to remind you that FREE maths tutoring will begin on Wednesday’s with our first session beginning in week 3 between 3:00 and 4:00pm. All students are welcome!
Thanks.

YOUR HEALTH MATTERS
Hi Everyone!
I’m Ann-Maree Brightman, the Mackay State High School Based Youth Health Nurse (SBYHN). I can be found in the Student Services area on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday one week and Thursday, Friday the following week. Please feel free to call me on 49579132 if you have any queries.
An outline of what I do
The SBYHN works with students and school community on issues that may affect the health and wellbeing of young people and the school community as a whole. This includes helping with curriculum, teaching and learning activities, providing health information and referral, supporting the development of the environment and school culture that supports health and wellbeing, and working with the community and other services.
The SBYHN can provide health and wellbeing information about:
- healthy eating and physical activity
- feeling unhappy or stressed
- relationships
- healthy skin
- personal and family problems
- growth and development
- sexual health
- smoking, alcohol and other drugs.
Confidentiality
Young people have a right to confidentiality when accessing health services. As a health service provider the SBYHN respects this but there are some things the nurse must refer or act upon.
In most cases, it is best for young people to talk to their parents about health and wellbeing issues. I can support young people to do this.
Getting the best help for health
At times other services can provide more appropriate or further help or support for young people. The SBYHN will discuss the options for working with other services or linking young people with the right services.
The SBYHN does not provide
- treatment such as medications, injections, first aid
- physical examinations
- ongoing counselling for psychological problems.
Student appointments can be made to see me before or after school, or during breaks.
The beginning of the school year is a great time to get vision and hearing checked to ensure the best start possible. Vision and hearing loss can affect all age groups. Some options are listed below to assist with this.
